SWIIS Foster Care Outcomes

Kate and Dan’s Story is a story of family ties:

Kate and her brother Dan were very close and they had relied upon one another for support through some pretty difficult times at home. When they eventually came into local authority care, it was very clear that this bond had to be maintained. With the help of SWIIS, Kate and Dan went to stay with Kath and Barry.

Dan had missed a lot of school but SWIIS’s Education Support worker was able to liaise closely with local schools in getting Dan a place and in helping him with lessons. SWIIS Health Advisor was able to work closely with Kate who had been neglecting her own well-being, in trying to look after her younger brothers.

‘I love my brothers so much …. But Kath and Barry and my social worker Lisa .. They’ve helped me realise that I can’t do it all…. they’ve helped me to get some ‘me time’ without feeling bad about it. I’ve made friends at school; I’m having a sleepover at Neeta’s house at the weekend. “.. Kate and Dan are interested in everything I do or don’t do. We talk about sex, drugs or anything I want to discuss, nothing gets shussed away. ‘ ‘We’ve all been through a lot and we all still miss mum, but we all have regular contact and Kate and Dan get on well with mum, which makes a big difference.

‘ Kath and Barry have recently been approved to look after Kate and Dan’s younger brother Kyle.
