Who can Foster?

No two children are the same and neither are their carers. At SWIIS we believe that the training and support we provide can enable you to do a really good job and play a key role in creating the best opportunities for children and young people.

Do you have?

  • Time, energy and enthusiasm for children and their interests
  • A spare room in your home
  • A flexible approach, adaptable attitude and the ability to work in a team
  • A positive outlook
  • At least one adult in the household available full time (i.e. not working)
  • Respect for individuality and diversity
  • A Willingness to learn from your own and other people’s experiences and to attend regular training

You don’t need to be married or have a big house. What matters is your skills, personality and ability to understand what young people are going through - and how you could help.

Of course,  there are basic conditions that apply to everyone. If you would like more information, please see our FAQ’s section of the site..

But our general advice ?  talk to us …contact your local SWIIS Team and speak to their advisors. They will give you impartial advice and, if you agree, send more information and - again with your permission - arrange a visit to talk about the fostering role.  In some areas, an existing foster carer will also visit you,  so that you can find out first hand, what its really like to be a SWIIS foster carer,  from those who know what its like first hand.
